Privacy

This page lays out exactly what data this site collects, what happens to it, and how to opt out. The TL;DR: almost nothing, no cookies, no IP retention.

What this site collects

Pageviews (Umami)

We use Umami, a privacy-focused analytics tool, to count how many people visit which pages. Specifically we use Umami Cloud, the hosted version run by Umami Software — so this is a third-party service, not a server we operate. Their servers are in the US and EU.

What Umami records for each pageview:

• The page you viewed — path, query string, page title, and the site you arrived from (referrer).
• Coarse device details — browser, operating system, device type, screen size, and browser language, derived from your User-Agent.
• Approximate location — country, region, and city, derived from your IP address at the moment of the request.

What it does not do:

• No cookies. The Umami tracker sets none, which is why this site has no cookie banner.
• Your IP address is not stored. It is used to look up the location above and then discarded — it is never written to the analytics database.
• Do Not Track honored. The tracker is loaded with data-do-not-track="true", so if your browser sends a Do Not Track signal, nothing about your visit is collected at all.
• No cross-site tracking, no profiles, no ads. Umami does not follow you to other websites and does not build an identity for you. We do not sell, syndicate, or share the data with anyone.

Umami Software processes this data on our behalf. Their handling of it is governed by Umami’s privacy policy; they state that Umami Cloud complies with GDPR and CCPA.

Tip submissions

When you submit a tip via the contact form, we receive what you typed (name and email are optional). What we deliberately do not receive or store:

• Your IP address is not saved with the tip. A one-way SHA-256 hash of your IP is held in a separate rate-limit counter for one hour, then automatically deleted. This is solely to prevent spam abuse — the hash can’t be reversed to recover the IP.
• No User-Agent, no referrer, no geolocation, no browser fingerprint.
• No analytics event is fired when you submit a tip. Umami sees the tip page as a pageview like any other; it never sees what you typed.

Even if we received a legal subpoena, we cannot reveal a tipster’s identity from the contents of our tip storage — that information was never collected.

Spam prevention (Cloudflare Turnstile)

The tip form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to filter bots. Turnstile is a privacy-focused alternative to reCAPTCHA — it does not use cookies and does not share data with advertising networks. Cloudflare’s privacy policy governs what they see.

That’s it

No advertising trackers, no Google Analytics, no Meta Pixel, no fingerprinting libraries, no session replay, no behavioral profiling. The full list of what loads on the site is in the Content-Security-Policy header sent with every page: Cloudflare Turnstile, Umami, Google Fonts. Nothing else. You can check it yourself in your browser’s developer tools, under the Network tab, in the response headers for any page.

How to opt out

You can opt out of all analytics on this site below. The opt-out is stored as a single-purpose flag in your browser’s local storage — not a cookie, and nothing is sent to us or to Umami when you set it. It applies only to this site (not to your other browsing), and it lives in this browser only, so you would need to set it again on another device or after clearing site data.

If you contact us

If you include an email when you send a tip, we may write back. Your email isn’t added to any list, isn’t shared with anyone, and is deleted along with the tip when we’re done.

Cookies

This site sets no cookies — not for analytics, not for anything else. Cloudflare may set a security cookie at the network layer (separate from analytics, separate from us) if it detects bot-like behavior; you can read about Cloudflare’s cookie usage in their privacy policy. The analytics opt-out above uses local storage, which is a browser preference rather than a cookie and is never transmitted anywhere.

Changes

If we change any of this, the new version replaces this page. There’s no mailing list, so the only way to know is to check back.
